Why I still get annoyed seeing serious founders using free Gmail (and how we fixed domain setup in Mitsa)
Last month, one guy showed me this inference he built, crazy fast CUDA setup and honestly super impressive stuff. But then call ends, and he goes “hey will drop you the deck and tech paper in a bit”, and barely five minutes in, my notification rings and I look at the sender line:
alex.builder2024@gmail.com
Man, my face just fell. Instant cringe, cant even help it.
Like here you are, pitching people to wire hundreds of thousands of dollars into your venture account, talking big about models and sovereignty, yet for your actual public identity you decided to go squat on Google’s free public backyard alongside two billion high schoolers and automated phishing bots? And when I brought this up casually to couple other founders, they just laughed it off like “gaurav who the hell cares what sits on the right side of the @ sign anyway”. But thing is, you really, really should care, and let me tell you why exactly.
1. You do not own that mailbox, your just a tenant there
Everyone thinks getting banned or locked out is something that only happens to crypto scammers or shady marketing guys, until one random Tuesday you connect to a hotel Wi-Fi in Frankfurt or Tokyo and Google’s automated fraud bot decides your session looks slightly weird. Boom. Next thing you see is some endless verification loop wanting a recovery phone number you dumped in 2021 when you switched carriers.
And then what? Who you gonna call? Exactly, nobody. There is no customer care desk in Mountain View, no person you can get on phone, no Dan on live support. All you got is some stale community forum with hundred other desperate folks screaming into the void while an AI bot marks their threads as resolved. If your Stripe receipts, AWS root logins, investor communications and vendor contracts is tied to that free @gmail.com address, your business is pretty much dead overnight because some opaque heuristic had a bad morning.
Now look at what happens if you just spent eight bucks buying your own domain, be it a .com or .io or whatever. The keys stays with you in Cloudflare or Porkbun or Namecheap. Tomorrow if your email provider decides to act funny, or jack their pricing up by 400%, or suspend you without giving reason, you just hop into your DNS registrar, change two MX records pointing somewhere else, and boom, within fifteen minutes you are back sending and receiving emails without any client or investor even knowing anything happened. That is what ownership actually means. The rest is just renting an apartment with no lease agreement.
2. Legacy providers made this whole thing a headache
Real reason people hesitate setting up a custom domain early on is cause big tech made it feel like solving an ancient puzzle.
Workspace and Outlook will happily bill you S 5.48%↑ every month for every single inbox you create, which gets crazy expensive real quick if you just want couple different addresses for yourself and a team. We thought this is ridiculous. Hooking up an email to a domain you already bought should take barely a minute, tops.
How it works in Mitsa Mail
When I was coding the domain management for Mitsa, I wanted zero enterprise tax and zero DNS headaches. The whole setup takes like three clicks:
Punch your domain into Mitsa
Go to your Mitsa settings, click on Custom Domains, type your domain name (like mycompany.com). Mitsa generates a one-off verification string right there.
Add one TXT & MX record
Head to wherever you registered your domain (Cloudflare, Namecheap, GoDaddy, whatever you like). Just drop in a TXT record:
Type: TXT
Host: @ (or leave empty)
Value: mitsa-verify=[your-code]
And to get incoming emails delivered straight into your Mitsa inbox, add the MX record:
Type: MX
Host: @
Value: mail.mitsa.email.
Priority: 10
Hit Verify, you’re good
Click Verify in Mitsa. We query the authoritative root nameservers directly without waiting around for third-party caching, so in about five seconds you get the green verified tag.
After that, you can send, receive, and create aliases under you@yourdomain.com straight inside Mitsa. No per-seat extortion, no weird legacy dashboards.
Stop building on rented land
If you’re building a real thing, stop letting an ad company own your identity. Grab a domain, point two records, and own your own communication for real.
